Cyprus Climate - Cyprus Weather
One of the main benefits of being on holiday on a Mediterranean island
is the sunshine throughout the year, and Cyprus is no exception.
In fact, Cyprus
probably has ideal weather for the region with fine temperatures and sun almost
every day.
Extremes of temperatures are rare, meaning Cyprus has something to
offer you every month of the year, whether you fancy swimming in October, visiting
the many cultural sites or taking part in one of the festivals.
While there are
seasonal fluctuations, they are not too drastic.
The Spring Season on Cyprus
Early spring in Cyprus is a great time to visit, with pleasant daytime temperatures
and many of the ancient ruins surrounded by swathes of wildflowers.
In January
the first terrestrial orchids come into bloom on Cyprus, and by mid-February
the countryside comes to life with fresh green grass and the almond trees come
into bloom. March days may still be cool with daytime temperatures around 19C
or 65F, cooler at night.
In April and into the mid-May spring is at its fullness.
This is an ideal time for hikes and off-road adventures, particularly in the
Akamas Peninsula.
Summer on Cyprus is when it sizzles
A
Cypriot summer stretches from mid-May to mid-October and summer here means high
temperatures, cloudless blue skies and cooling sea breezes. Summer in Cyprus
means swimming, sunbathing and water sports, including scuba diving and sailing.
At this time of year, avoid the hottest part of the day to explore the archaeological
sites! Visit them early in the morning or in late afternoon. Expect temperatures
of 32C / 90F degrees at the beach and even hotter inland! Summer temperatures
are refreshingly cooler in the Troodos Mountains, making them ideal for hiking
or even just relaxing.
The daylight hours of September and the first weeks of October are still sunny
and the sea is still warm enough for a comfortable swim. Really, it still feels
like summer.
Autumn on Cyprus
Toward the end of October the evenings tend to get a little cooler, and in
October, through November the leaves of Cyprus do change colour in the Troodos
Mountains, with the vineyards taking on hues of gold and crimson. In Cyprus though
mid-November can still feel like an British summer.
Winter on Cyprus
December and January are the months bringing the possibility of rain, but
still an average of six hours of bright sunshine a day it may not feel like winter
to you. This is the time of year when other Mediterranean island destinations
shut down for a couple of months, but not so Cyprus. The island is well known
as an international business centre and, with its many important heritage sites
and museums, all at their least crowded in winter offers a 'Cultural Winter'.
Into early February there is occasional rain, and often snow in the Troodos Mountains
- ideal for skiing!
