Cyprus Today

Cyprus Today - The Republic of Cyprus today is divided into six districts, whose capitals share the same name:

Famagusta - Kyrenia - Larnaca - Limassol - Nicosia - Paphos

The 6 Districts of Cyprus Today are:

Famagusta District of Cyprus

Its main town is the island's most important port, Famagusta. The city of Famagusta is currently controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is only recognized by Turkey.

A district administration in "exile" exists on the Republic of Cyprus controlled part of the island. This part of the district has a population of 37,738 inhabitants (2001).

Most of the district has been under Turkish control since the 1974 invasion. Since then, the northeastern section, including the Karpasia Peninsula, has been administered separately as the İskele District, a division not recognized by the Republic of Cyprus.

Kyrenia District of Cyprus

Its main town is Kyrenia. It is the smallest of Cyprus' districts, and is the only one fully controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognised only by Turkey.

A district administration in "exile" exists on the Republic of Cyprus controlled part of the island.

Larnaca District of Cyprus

Its main town is Larnaca. A small part of the district was occupied by the Turkish army in 1974, and is currently controlled by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is not recognized internationally.

The authorities in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus administer the Turkish-occupied parts of Larnaca District as part of Nicosia District.

Larnaca hosts both a port and the island's most important airport, Larnaca International Airport. The town also hosts the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque which is sometimes referred to as the third holiest site in Islam.

Limassol District of Cyprus

Its main town is Limassol. A part of the district consists of the British overseas territory Akrotiri and Dhekelia, also known as Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) and is under the sovereignty of the United Kingdom.

Nicosia District of Cyprus

Its main town is the island country's capital city, Nicosia. The Turkish-controlled northern part of the city is the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, recognized only by Turkey.

Turkish-controlled areas of the Larnaca District of the Republic of Cyprus are administered as part of Nicosia District, while western parts of the Nicosia District under Turkish control are administered as part of the new Güzelyurt District.

Paphos District of Cyprus

Paphos is situated in the western part of Cyprus. Its main town and capital is Paphos. The entire district is controlled by the internationally recognized government of Cyprus. There are four municipalities in Paphos District: Paphos, Yeroskipou, Peyia, and Polis Chrysochous.

Its coastal area is characterized by gulfs and coves, capes and points, beaches and tiny isles. The district can be divided into three morphological regions: the coastal plain, lying mainly below 200 metres, the hilly area extending from plain up to the igneous rocks of Paphos forest and the mountainous region, lying mainly on the igneous rocks of the Paphos forest. North-west of the District is the Akamas peninsula.
